Have you ever had a chance to meet wolfdogs in real life? I hadn’t! I had seen videos of people visiting wolf dog sanctuary’s in various states but didn’t know Washington a sanctuary of its own! To be honest, this trip was also part of a birthday surprise so it was a win-win. This particular sanctuary is located in Shelton, Washington. A short 30-minute drive from home.

ROAM Wolfdog Sanctuary
The last mile or so driving up to the sanctuary is unpaved and occasionally a bumpy ride. Well worth it though! Thankfully, there are some signs about ROAM Wolf Dog Sanctuary on the roads leading up to the site. Our tour was the first one for the day.

After a short safety talk from our tour guides and being able to meet Nox and Ransom, we were off! These particular wolfdogs are only 7 months old and already weighing in around 170 pounds.

These two were not only interesting to learn about but were quite the entertainment too! Every few minutes Nox or Ransom decided they were done walking, temporarily, and would find a bush to lay down in. Our guides had to coax them out to rejoin the group with the treats they had brought along with them.

Interesting fact: since wolfdogs are virtually the complete opposite to dogs, any negative reinforcement causes more harm than good. Our guides told us about a time that a wolfdog had lived with its human for two years but one slip up with training and the human told the wolfdog “no” and the wolfdog no longer considered its human a part of the “pack”. This is just one example of how different training wolfdogs are compared to domesticated dogs.
Photo Shoot with Nox and Ransom
Our first photo opportunity with Nox and Ransom came about 20 minutes into our walk. The tour guides showed us how to get them to pose for photos and then we each had the opportunity to feed and take a photo with Nox and Ransom.

Before we had a chance to move onto our next spot on the tour, Nox decided he wanted to chew on a branch on the log we were near. Just look at those teeth!

We walked and talked for another hour or so, learning more about these amazing creatures. Before saying our goodbyes and thanking everyone for a wonderful morning, Nox was up to attempting a balancing act for us! Of course, with food as an award. Just look at those massive paws!

Overall Thoughts
I had an absolutely amazing time! This adventure was less than a mile on the property and about an hour and a half long. It was incredibly fun getting to learn about wolfdogs and taking a walk with two young pups. Our tour guides were incredibly informative in providing educational information about these amazing creatures.
