In 2021 I had the urge to go on a trip. After quarantining for 18 months, I was itching to get out. Most of the world was shut down due to Covid-19. Thankfully, things were starting to open up again and I couldn’t decide where to go. I played with the idea of traveling abroad. The options were too vast. I got overwhelmed with planning a solo trip. I even debated on doing a train travel trip in the US but decided that having my own car to go on last minute drives sounded better. So, that’s what I did. I planned a trip to North Cascades National Park, Mt. Rainier National Park, and then out to the Oregon Coast before coming back home. The whole trip took about a week, and a LOT of driving.

I loaded up my car with all the essentials: my cozy sleeping bag, a comfy sleeping pad, plenty of refreshing water, and tasty snacks that were ready to enjoy. Of course, my beloved camera gear made the cut as well! I hit the road bright and early, filled with excitement. After nearly 8 hours of scenic driving, I arrived in the beautiful Northern Washington. It was late September when I embarked on this adventure, and while it got dark a bit earlier than if I’d traveled a few months prior, I found beauty in the transition of the day. With the clouds gently rolling in, I decided to find a peaceful spot to rest for the night. A fun fact I didn’t mention earlier is that most of my nights during this journey would be spent car camping. Discovering charming and budget-friendly locations to unwind and recharge. I had just one planned stay at an Air BnB, which added a little variety to my trip!
Cascades National Park
This was the first night I spent car camping. Due to this, I was able to wake up early enough to be able to enjoy the beautiful sunrise pictured above. The early morning mist and fog were starting to lift with the sunrise. The park was just starting to get some visitors. Thankfully, I was able to enjoy this sunrise all to myself. Bright colors reflected from the clouds provided a relaxing wake up after an 8 hour drive day. Now, it was time to stretch my legs and explore the park I had driven long hours to be able to see.
I had started out on my journey early enough in the day. Thankfully, I didn’t encounter any other hikers until I began my way back to my car. I hiked Thunder Knob Trail, 3.4 miles in total. The crisp morning air and gorgeous scenery was an amazing way to start the day. About halfway up, there is a bench where hikers can sit and rest and enjoy the scenery. The picture posted above is from an overlook farther up from the rest location. It was a peaceful area to just sit and enjoy the gorgeous teal colored lake and watch the cars slowly drive by from below. Barely any traffic or noise pollution kept me from taking in the scene. The air was crisp with winter approaching. After the hike, and returning to my car, I set out to get some food and check into the Airbnb I had booked in Chehalis, Washington where I would be staying for a few nights.
Overall Thoughts
There are more hikes and sites I want to experience here at North Cascades National Park. I am very glad I made this my first stop. I feel it’s not as well known as the other National Parks in Washington, or even in the Pacific Northwest.
I didn’t have the energy to explore any other hiking trails in the park. However, I will definitely be coming back. This National Park is definitely a gem and easily overlooked. If you’re in the area, stop by and see if you find any new favorite hiking spots!
Make sure to check back where I share my experiences in Mt. Rainier National Park, my next stop on my road trip excursion in the Pacific Northwest.
